TMI Wins First OCNA Award

awardphoto225Each year the Ontario Community Newspaper Association (OCNA) hosts an awards gala for its more than 300 member newspapers, and this year The Meaford Independent earned its very first OCNA Better Newspapers Premier award.

The Independent received a first place award in the Community Service category for our Municipal Election Guide issue (September 26, 2014). The OCNA Better Newspapers awards were presented on Friday May 22, at the Sheraton Centre hotel in Toronto.

Meaford Woman Charged With Racing

A 28 year old Meaford woman has been charged with racing a motor vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act after she was stopped by Grey County OPP for driving 151 kilometres per hour in a posted 80 kilometre per hour zone.  The infraction took place on Sunday May 24 at 4:04 pm, on Grey Bruce Line north of Sideroad 5 in the Township of Chatsworth.

Council to Vote on Less Restrictive Debt Management Policy

council chamber333At their next meeting on May 25, Meaford councillors are scheduled to vote on a proposed revision to the municipal long-term debt policy.

If approved, the new policy, which was presented to council at their May 11 committee of the whole meeting, would shift from a restrictive policy implemented in the wake of Meaford's five year plan for financial recovery after having found itself with some $3 million in accumulated deficits, to a less restrictive set of rules that would give the municipality more flexibility when considering funding options for municipal projects.

Meaford Man Charged With Theft From Vehicles

On Monday, May 18, 2015 at approximately 3:00 a.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was alerted to an unknown male entering vehicles on Ridge Road in the Municipality of Meaford.

Police attended the area and arrested the suspect in question after they had observed him entering two vehicles parked on Meadow Lane in Meaford.  The suspect was found to be in possession of stolen property, including items which had been stolen earlier this month from vehicles in Bognor and Feversham.
