A second person has been charged in connection with an ongoing homicide investigation in Meaford.
On May 3, 2020, at approximately 4:00 p.m., the Grey Bruce Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a missing person report for 25-year-old Emerson Sprung, who was last seen leaving his family residence in Meaford. His remains were located on May 6, 2020.
In June of this year, shortly after his trial had begun, Meaford resident Matthew McQuarrie pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the fatal stabbing of Sprung. McQuarrie was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for 15 years.
On July 25, 2024, as a result of the ongoing investigation by the Grey Bruce OPP Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, a second person was charged.
Laurel Campbell, age 32 of Meaford, has been arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder, contrary to section 240 of the Criminal Code.
The accused has been held for a bail hearing and was released. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on September 19, 2024.
