Move Over Mozart

The Meaford Culture Foundation has subsidized violin lessons this year, and six children between the ages of 6 and 10 completed the beginner program, receiving their certificates with great pride and fanfare.

The violin is an extraordinarily challenging instrument to learn and these kids did an amazing job of sticking with it. There is a lot to think about with this instrument. There are no frets like a guitar. The first step is learning to hold the violin and bow properly, which takes time and patience.

In this instant information age, it is often difficult for young people to slow down, focus, and build skills slowly. There is definitely no instant gratification with the violin at the beginning! Slow and steady progress is realized with dedication both to attending lessons and practising at home,” said Jen Burak, a member of SweetStrings who is coordinating the programme.

Violinist Matthew Hayes, the primary instructor, noted that, “It was a real privilege to teach the beginner violin students, and especially to witness their growth not just as musicians but as human beings. We have had so much fun working together as a group learning to play and read music. I look forward to next year!”

When the kids were asked what they enjoyed most about their music experience they were quick to mention how fun it was to learn together and to make friends during lesson time. The mother of one of the students also remarked that her child’s self-confidence has risen noticeably as result of being part of the lessons.

This year, the students had a chance to play for an audience at the Meaford Long Term Care, and accompanied SweetStrings in O Canada at a concert in January. Small steps but important ones in developing confidence, taking risks, and working as an ensemble.

This coming fall, a new beginner class will be offered along with a second year class for any children who have had at least one year of violin instruction.

Meaford is incredibly lucky to have the MCF subsidizing this program, which is not free, but is affordable,” said organizers.
