Meet Mr. and Mrs. Scarecrow

Meet Mr. and Mrs. Scarecrow, the official ambassadors of the Meaford Scarecrow Invasion and Family Festival’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

Valerie and Larry Crowe have been chosen by the event’s executive to be the faces of the invasion throughout September in the days leading up to the parade and festival on September 30.

Larry is a long-term member of the Canadian Armed Forces currently serving as a financial services clerk at CFB Borden. Val is a Department of Defence public servant working as the medical records clerk at the 4th Canadian Division Training Centre in Meaford.

The couple love to dress up for special events and embrace the spirit of their  community wherever it may be. The couple have lived in a variety of locations both abroad and as Val says, “across Canada, from one side of the country to the other, from Prince George to Gander.”

The Meaford invasion and parade reminds them in a small way of the themed parties, carnivals, medieval feasts, and birthday celebrations that they knew and took part in when living in Germany where everyone dressed in costumes. “It’s such a fun way of getting into and getting to know the community,” said Larry.

Event sponsors, donors, and volunteers are invited to attend the first of the August  scarecrow workshops to meet Mr. and Mrs. Scarecrow and help add the finishing touches to the 25th anniversary scarecrows, August 17, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Rotary Pavilion in Meaford. More than 300 scarecrows are expected to invade Meaford, Bognor, Annan, and Leith soon after the September long weekend.
