Marsh Marigolds: An Agricultural Thriller

The Meaford Hall Arts & Cultural Centre will present Marsh Marigolds: An Agricultural Thriller, a brand-new theatrical work by celebrated Canadian playwright Dan Needles, brought to life by acclaimed performer Rod Beattie and directed by Doug Beattie.

From the creators of the beloved and long-running Wingfield series comes a bold new chapter set in the fictional farming community of Persephone Township. Known for their sharp wit and unforgettable characters, Needles and Beattie now venture into new territory—blending their signature humour with a gripping story of mystery, suspense, and intrigue.

Described by Needles as “what happens when Raymond Chandler gets lost in Persephone Township—a kind of Wingfield Noir,” Marsh Marigolds delivers a compelling mix of crime, politics, romance, and rural life.

Audiences will reconnect with familiar faces while meeting a host of intriguing new characters—all portrayed by Rod Beattie in a remarkable solo performance. At the centre of the story is Hope Wingfield, daughter of Walt and Maggie Wingfield, now grown and working at the provincial legislature for the Minister of Agriculture. Determined to champion responsible farming and carry forward her family’s ideals, Hope quickly discovers that change comes with challenges—some political… and some far more dangerous.

The result is a story that is at once thought-provoking, heartfelt, and laugh-out-loud funny, offering a vivid and timely look at modern farming and rural life.

This performance is part of Meaford Hall’s ongoing commitment to presenting outstanding Canadian artists and meaningful cultural experiences.
