It took a year to get the BrokerLink Insurance Lawn Bowling Tournament completed after being cancelled twice last summer due to inclement weather.
August 8 of this summer proved perfect for the event, with some sunshine, a little bit of cloud, and a breeze. This annual tournament is ‘Open Triples’, which means teams are made up of three players of any gender combination. This year there were teams made up of three men, three women, two men and one woman, and two women and one man. Players came from Chesley, Owen Sound, and Kitchener, with several Meaford teams participating.
It was a hometown team that topped the field with the help of an import filling in for a team member sidelined with an injury. Brad Tichbourne, Jill Calvert-Goetz from Meaford and Wayne Martin from Kitchener had three wins and 42 points to capture first place. Bill Bouwman, Dan Dekking and Lynda Eagles, also from Meaford, were second with two wins and 38 points. The third place team of Helmut Vok, Lynn Beaton, and Islay Hewgill were from Owen Sound. They had two wins and 32 points. Many thanks to BrokerLink for sponsoring the tournament.
More news from the club: After winning at the District 8 Championships, the Meaford Lawn Bowling Club will be represented by Brad Tichbourne and Jill Calvert-Goetz at the Ontario Mixed Pairs Provincial Championships in Lindsay. Brad Tichbourne and Susan Singleton from Meaford paired with Ashley Turcotte and Ryan Blair to win the Districts and will compete in the mixed Novice Fours Provincial Championship in Pickering. This event was won last year by the Meaford team of Brad Tichbourne, Owen Tichbourne, Jill Calvert-Goetz, and Wendy Calvert-Morris.
On August 22, Meaford will host a Youth Bowling Day at 10 a.m. Invitations have been extended to district clubs. It will be an opportunity for junior bowlers to meet, mingle and play with their counterparts from other clubs. This is a first for our district.
