Lawn Bowlers Back in Action

Lawn Bowling in Meaford is up and running again.

After closing for the 2020 season, organizers were anxious to get going this year, so they have been offering four sessions every week.

Something special happened on Friday night, July 30. A challenge was issued to their lawn bowling parents by Owen Tichbourne and Noah Calvert-Goetz. Owen, a local stonemason apprentice, had some experience with lawn bowling, but Noah, who attends college and plays baseball in Indiana, was a total novice. Owen’s dad, Brad, is an accomplished bowler and has represented the club at the provincial championships. Noah’s mom, Jill, also an excellent bowler, placed fourth with her local novice team at the provincial championships in 2019.

Club members and friends were invited to witness the challenge and were treated to some great games. In the first 6 end game, Noah and Owen dominated at first and were up 8-0 before Brad and Jill started a comeback. They were tied in the 5th but the sons scored one in the sixth to take the game. The second game was a reversal of the first with the parents up 8 points before Owen and Noah scored a point. Jill and Brad ultimately won the game 10-1 forcing a two end tie breaker. The sons scored 1 in the first and the parents scored 2 in the second to win the match.

The Meaford Lawn Bowling Club would love to see more people coming out to share in the fun. Sessions are Monday and Wednesday at 1 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m.

Check out their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meafordlawnbowlingclub and website www.meafordlawnbowling.ca , then contact them to let them know when you are coming so they can arrange for instructors.

Friday Challenge Nights could become a regular thing if there is interest. Challenge us or challenge another group. We will arrange the match,” said organizers.
