Junior Optimists Hope to Spread Kindness with Cards

The Owen Sound and District Junior Optimists have partnered with three local legions to honour local seniors and people currently serving in our military. Members of the public are invited to write to a member of the Canadian military in gratitude for their service or send a positive message to a local resident in long-term care.

Original postcards created by Junior Optimists are now available at the Owen Sound, Tara, and Chatsworth legions for free.

Displays at the three local legions include postcards and instructions for anyone to send a ‘Kindness Card’. People can choose a free postcard or use one of their own. Simply address the card to an anonymous recipient in our military or a ‘Long Term Care Resident’. The Owen Sound and District Junior Optimists will ensure all cards are delivered, including providing postage where needed.

It is important to show appreciation and respect to members of our military and to local seniors. In addition, being kind to others is known to improve a person’s own happiness. This project does both,” said Parker Davis, Owen Sound and District Junior Optimist advisor.

Cards will be delivered after Remembrance Day, before Christmas, and in time for Optimist Day 2025 on February 6. Two years ago, this program resulted in 100 cards being delivered and 120 last year, thanks to the Owen Sound Army Cadets. This year the goal is to send 125 Kindness Cards.
