Generous Grey Bruce Babes

On Sunday, November 28, the first annual Woman To Woman event took place at the historic River House on Miller Street. Hosted by Jen Burak, women from Meaford, Blue Mountains, Thornbury, Clarksburg, Collingwood, and Owen Sound gathered to wrap gifts and write personal notes to women currently residing at The Women’s Centre Grey Bruce, in Owen Sound.

Sadly, COVID has seen a rise in domestic abuse and support for the shelter is always needed. The people working at the shelter provide crisis intervention, safety planning, counselling and transition services for women and children affected by abuse in Grey and Bruce Counties. For more information you can visit their website

A total of 55 ladies supported Woman to Woman, including Meaford’s own deputy mayor Shirley Keaveney and friend Liz Harris. Artist Suzette Terry was on hand, and Bridgit Light Craig from Craig Gallery was among the supporters of this worthwhile cause. Lesely Fisher, owner of Loved You Madly in Thornbury, was also there to lend a helping hand. A number of women from the Blue Mountains arrived with gifts and smiles with co-host Mary Muir leading the charge.

With $3,100 raised, each woman at the Women’s Centre will be given $50 in gift cards, a personal cozy gift bought for them, and a note.

Receiving a personal note from a woman who cares is very meaningful for a woman in crisis,” said host Jen Burak. “Just knowing that there is another woman out there thinking of you can make a difference.”

Heather Sheldrick, the dynamic executive director of the Women’s Centre, spoke at Woman to Woman. She was touched by the generosity, saying, “I was astounded to meet so many thoughtful, kind women. It was a unique opportunity for me to speak to Meaford-area community members about our shelter and programs. I know that the gifts and caring notes will bring a little light to the women and children that we provide a safe place for over the holiday season.”

Well done, Meaford Mavens and all you Grey Bruce Babes – together you raised $3,100!
