Coyote Wins Rick Westwood Athlete of Excellence Award

The Georgian Bay Coyotes Track Club is a registered club of the Minor Track Association of Ontario, better known as the MTA, a not-for-profit corporation and organizing body for youth track and field and cross-country running in Ontario. The MTA serves roughly 75 clubs and more than 3,000 athletes from all over Ontario. Each year the MTA recognizes outstanding athletes in the areas of Track and Field including, sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws, and distance running with the Rick Westwood Athlete of Excellence Award. This award is given to top performers in each of the age and gender divisions.

This past November, the recipients for the 2021 season were announced and the Georgian Bay Coyotes Track Club is pleased to announce that Emmett Leary of Meaford is the recipient of the 2021 Rick Westwood Athlete of Excellence Award in the Atom Male (U13) category for distance running. In 2021 Emmett was the provincial champion in the 1500m, 3rd in the province in the 800m, and 2nd in the province in Cross-Country.

With the COVID-19 virus still a concern, the MTA did not host an awards banquet as is their usual custom, but sent each athlete their award along with a certificate of achievement. Team coaches were able to present Emmett with his trophy and certificate, which he was very pleased to receive but had few words to say about his accomplishment other than he would like to keep working hard and win it again.

Emmett is the third Coyote to receive this award in the club’s 12-year history. Congratulations Emmett! The Coyotes are proud of you for all your hard work and dedication to the sport of athletics!” said the club.
