COVID-19 Cases Spiking in Grey-Bruce

A recent spike in positive COVID-19 tests in the Grey-Bruce region has Dr. Ian Arra, Grey-Bruce Medical Officer of Health concerned.

“We have been seeing a deeply concerning trend of a significant increase in the number of cases locally, and in the number of close contacts of these cases. These findings are indicative of fatigue related to following public health measures,” Dr. Arra noted in his daily update report issued on Sunday evening. “It is important that we re-focus our energy on the basic measures that can keep us safe – the same ones that got us through the spring first wave, including: the 3 Ws of Washing hands frequently, Watching distance (ideally 6ft), and wear face covering correctly.”

10 new cases were reported on Sunday with four in Grey Highlands, two in Huron-Kinloss, and one each in Southgate, West Grey, Kincardine, and Arran-Elderslie, the most in a single day in Grey-Bruce since 14 cases were recorded on April 18, early in the pandemic.

The Grey-Bruce region has now seen 221 COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, and there are currently 33 active cases with no hospitalizations. Thus far there have been no deaths in Grey-Bruce attributed to the virus.

The number of cases in Meaford has remained steady at 13 for more than a month.

Provincially the number of cases continues to rise, with provincial modelling suggesting that Ontario could see 6.500 new cases daily by mid-December.
