Guests stepped back in time more than 1,000 years on September 15 for Dine Like a Viking, a unique evening of food, history, and storytelling presented by the Meaford Museum.
The special event brought the world of the Norse people to life through authentic inspired flavours, fascinating stories, and an immersive atmosphere. Guests dined on a four-course meal inspired by Old Norse cuisine, expertly prepared and catered by local chef Christina Sheardown, before enjoying an engaging presentation from renowned Viking historian and naturalist Robert Burcher.
Throughout the evening, guests walked through a timeline tracing Viking history from 737 to 1312, explored runes and historical cards at their tables, and enjoyed the flickering glow of a simulated fire that helped create an authentic Viking-inspired setting.
“Dine Like a Viking offered guests a rare opportunity to experience history in a completely different way – through food, culture, and storytelling,” said Jody Seeley, curator at the Meaford Museum. “The Vikings continue to capture our imagination centuries later, and this evening gave us a chance to explore the history behind the myths and discover what life was really like.”
The beautifully decorated tables featured bags of runes for guests to explore and take home with them after the event, along with historic cards and candles that added to the atmosphere. Each detail helped create a memorable backdrop for an evening of discovery.
Guests were then treated to a four-course dinner inspired by Old Norse cuisine. The menu featured wild mushroom and barley soup, herbed salad, juniper beef stew, and a spiced apple tart for dessert. The evening was capped off with a toast featuring a glass of mead.
During his presentation, Burcher explored Viking myths, traditions and daily life, helping guests separate popular misconceptions from historical fact. Combined with the meal and interactive elements throughout the evening, the experience offered guests an opportunity to not only learn about Viking history, but to immerse themselves in it.
By the end of the evening, guests left with full stomachs, new knowledge, and memories of a night that brought more than 1,000 years of history to life.
Following the success of Dine Like a Viking, plans are already underway for the Meaford Museum’s next special historical dinner experience: Witch Hunt Trials Dinner, taking place October 22, 2027.

The evening will once again be catered by Christina Sheardown and will feature a wide array of artifacts from the Steve Santini Museum collection.
