I wanted to bring something to your attention that I believe is important for the community to be aware of.
Some of my campaign signs have been stolen and vandalized, including signs that were placed on private properties with the permission of the property owners.
I understand that elections bring different opinions, strong feelings and political debate. However, stealing or vandalizing campaign signs—particularly signs that have been legally placed on private property—is not an appropriate way to express political position.
Campaigning takes a significant amount of time, effort and personal expense. Candidates and volunteers are investing in our community because they care about its future. Campaign materials are not free, and when signs are stolen or damaged, it creates additional costs and takes time away from actually engaging with residents.
More importantly, I understand that the theft or intentional damage of property can constitute a Criminal offence. I would encourage anyone who witnesses this behaviour to report it to the appropriate authorities rather than becoming involved themselves.
We can disagree. We can debate. We can challenge candidates and hold them accountable. That’s democracy.
But let’s do better than stealing or vandalizing someone’s campaign signs.
Let’s respect private property, respect the democratic process, and respect one another.
I believe the Municipality of Meaford is better than this, and I hope we can all think better, act better and set a positive example for our community and its future.
