The national lifeguard shortage impacting communities across Canada nearly resulted in the closure of Meaford’s public outdoor swimming pool last summer, however a closure of the Blue Dolphin public swimming pool was avoided when council approved an agreement with the Grey-Bruce YMCA.
Now, the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce has signed a five-year deal with the Municipality of Meaford to run the Blue Dolphin Pool.
“While last year’s attendance was modest, this year, with proactive outreach and community engagement, we’ve secured sponsorships for several free public swim blocks on Friday nights in July and August. Meaford and surrounding area businesses have shown immense generosity, providing free Friday swim times,” said the Grey-Bruce YMCA. “The Blue Dolphin pool is a place where families bond and memories are created. At the YMCA, it’s our mission to extend beyond recreation, it’s about crucial life skills. With Meaford located on the shores of Nottawasaga Bay, learning to swim and educating Meaford’s youth about vital water safety knowledge is paramount.”
To ensure that all Meaford residents have access to sports and recreation activities, regardless of their financial circumstances, both the YMCA and the Municipality of Meaford offer financial assistance programs. Additionally, financial assistance to access all YMCA programs and services is available.
