The upcoming municipal election is an important opportunity for the people of Meaford to make their voices heard.
I believe elections are healthier for our democracy when voters have real choices. I have never been a fan of acclamations. When candidates compete for a position, they have to explain their ideas, defend their records and earn the confidence of the people they hope to represent.
This election is a chance to bring some new faces and new ideas to Meaford Council. I believe a fresh perspective can help our municipality take a hard look at how decisions are being made and how taxpayers’ money is being spent.
I personally know two candidates whom I support: Adam Vaughan and Justin Perks, and I encourage voters to consider supporting them. Adam is my cousin, so my support for him is personal, but I also believe that bringing new voices into municipal government is important.
Most importantly, I believe the new council must make fiscal responsibility a priority in every decision and every vote. Taxpayers deserve a council that carefully considers the cost of programs, projects and services, looks at alternatives, and clearly explains how decisions will be paid for.
We have seen governments at every level struggle with increasing debt and spending. Municipal government is no different in its responsibility to live within its means and protect taxpayers from unnecessary financial burdens.
So, I encourage everyone in Meaford: get out and vote. Voting is the first step. After the election, we also need to stay involved, ask questions and hold our elected representatives accountable.
Let’s give voters a real choice, bring some new faces to Council, and demand responsible financial management on behalf of every Meaford taxpayer.
