Awesome, amazing, and beautiful were some of the words used by the over 450 visitors to the 25th anniversary edition of the Meaford United Church Women’s Spring Quilt Show to describe the many quilts on display.

One visitor commented, “This show gets bigger and better every year.” As well as large quilts there was a display of smaller quilted items such as bags and crib size quilts.

As part of the silver anniversary celebrations, a special anniversary cake was served for the dessert at the luncheon and tea and coffee were served in silver pots. Each table in the lunch room was decorated with an arrangement of flowers in a cup and saucer. These were donated by Simply Unique in memory of Cathy Mower. The special displays were samples of the themes of past shows in a feature titled “A Blast From The Past”. There were antique irons, artwork, butter dishes, scrapbooks, an apple display and an antique violin handmade by Florence Brown’s father when he was a young boy. An antique bedroom, child’s room, and antique toys were set up for viewing. Several old quilts were hung – one over 100 years old. Another interesting quilt was made by the YWMS of St. Paul’s Church in Sydenham Township in 1927. All of the names of people who lived in the community were hand-embroidered on the quilt blocks.

Meaford Mayor Barb Clumpus, MPP Bill Walker, and MP Larry Miller and his wife Darlene were in attendance and extended best wishes to the UCW for the excellent show on the Silver Anniversary.

Mrs. McNally’s Grade 2-3 class from Meaford Community School visited the show, and were the first visitors on opening day. They were treated to juice and cookies after their tour.

Another feature of the show each year are the beautiful handmade cards using fabric by Marylin Kipp. She has a booth in the mall lobby of the church where she sells them at each show.

One member of the Quilt Show Committee, Florence Brown, has worked tirelessly on the organizing of the show for all 25 years of its existence. She was asked to cut the anniversary cake, given certificates for her contributions each year, and presented with a bouquet of flowers.

Planning is already underway for the 26th Spring Quilt Show presented by the Meaford UCW to be held on April 21 and April 22, 2017.
