Jazz & Blues Coming to Meaford Hall

Jazz and blues lovers won’t want to miss a series of performances coming to Meaford Hall featuring JW Jones, Holly Cole, Michael Kaeshammer and Little Miss Higgins in March and April.

Saturday, March 5 features Juno Award nominee, Ottawa-born guitarist JW Jones, who will kick off the series. “Jones is known for his high-energy show that keeps getting hotter,” said Meaford Hall in announcing the series of performances.

The Globe & Mail hails him as “one of this country’s top blues guitar stars”, Billboard Magazine says he’s part of “a new wave of young talent moving onto Canada’s blues stage”. “Jones’ style is a fluid amalgam of T-Bone Walker’s big, bright chords, Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s slashing leads, and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown’s jazzy sting,” according to US Blues Revue Magazine.

Two-time Juno Award winner Holly Cole will perform at Meaford Hall on Thursday, March 31. “There is an intelligence and sophistication to Cole’s singing that sets her apart. She can imbue well-worn standards and eclectic songs with an uncanny combination of sensuality, innocence, originality, and sheer musicality. Cole takes tunes everybody thinks they know and discovers new undercurrents in the venerable anthems of contemporary composers, wrapping her honesty, compassion, and sardonic wit around their sometimes-fragile creations. The results are sexy, provocative, spellbinding, sometimes dangerous – and never, ever dull,” said the Hall.

Michael Kaeshammer will perform on Thursday, April 14. “Regarded as one of the most entertaining performers in Canada of any musical genre, rock ‘n roll, boogie-woogie pianist Michael Kaeshammer is a world-class musician, a ‘cool’ singer, and a charismatic showman who connects with any concert-hall audience as though he was entertaining guests in his own living room,” said the Hall. “Kaeshammer’s performances, on record and on stage, are an invitation to join the party. He doesn’t play at you. He plays with you. At one of his shows, you’re all in it together – not only part of the story, but virtually part of the band.”

The final performance in the series will be from Little Miss Higgins on Saturday, April 13. “As if she just drove in off the back-road of another time with gravel dust and a sunset trailing behind her, this pocket-sized powerhouse plays music brewed up in old-time country blues sprinkled with a little jazz and maybe a hint of folk,” said the Hall in the announcement.

Meaford Hall is offering a 20 percent discount to those who purchase tickets for at least three of the performances in the series.

Individual prices are as follows: JW Jones (March 5) $32, Holly Cole (March 31) $65, Michael Kaeshammer (April 14) $35, and Little Miss Higgins (April 16) $23.
