Obituary: Armitage, Douglas Harry ‘Doug’

Doug passed away peacefully at the Meaford Long Term Care Home with his loving wife by his side on Friday, October 16, 2026, at the age of 91.

Born in Kitchener on October 18, 1934, the son of the late Harry and Marvel (nee Underwood) Armitage.

Doug was the beloved husband of Muriel Armitage (nee Almond, formerly Matthews) and was predeceased by his wife Ruth Armitage (nee Gamble) on September 27, 1972.

He was the loving father to Rick Armitage (Nancy) and Perri-Anne Steinbach, and stepfather to Mark Matthews (Cindy). He was predeceased by his son Kevin Armitage, grandson Dale Armitage, and step-grandson Evan Matthews.

Doug was the proud Grandpa ‘Papa’ of Shannon Mahn (Adam), Cory Armitage (Amy), Justin Armitage (Judi), Jeremy Armitage (Krystal), Jill Zarzycki (Matthew), Stepfanie Dobson (Adam), and Ian Matthews. He will be missed by his great-grandchildren Lily, Autum, Owen, Olivia, Emma, Mya, Quinton, Theodore, Ameliabelle, Sofia, and Sebastian.

Doug is survived by his sister, Rhea Steffler (late Dennis) and was predeceased by his sisters Verla Keller (late Rodger), Donna Witmer (late Darcy), and Karen Miskie (late Larry). He will be remembered fondly by many nieces, nephews, his extended family, and by Kimberley Matthews.

Doug was a very kindhearted and wise man. He was extremely knowledgeable about many things, but most would come to him for advice and guidance about carpentry and construction projects. In 1968, Doug and two partners started a business called Con-Dign Limited which was a design and build construction company, and later became Con-Ex General Contractors. They were involved in the construction of many arenas, nursing homes, curling rinks, and professional buildings around southwestern Ontario, including several in the Meaford area. Doug will certainly be missed by his family and friends but will never be forgotten.

A funeral service will be conducted at Christ Church Anglican, 34 Boucher St. E., Meaford, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 11 o’clock. Family will receive friends for visiting the hour prior to service. A service of committal and interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford.

As your expression of sympathy, donations to the War Amps, Brightshores Meaford Hospital Foundation, or Christ Church Anglican (cheques only please for the church) would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON, N4L 1B9, to whom arrangements have been entrusted. www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca
