In the August 20 edition of The Meaford Independent, you mused that “As far as summers go, this has been a fairly typical one.” (The 3Rs…Rants, Raves & Rumours, August 20, print edition) I beg to differ. This summer, smoke from wildfires raging across Northern Ontario choked our skies and made the air hazardous to breathe, alongside several days of extreme heat.
There is nothing typical about extreme heat or smoke-filled skies — and we cannot afford to normalize either.
We in Meaford have been relatively sheltered from climate change’s worst effects, but more than 60 percent of Canadians have been personally affected by climate disasters this year alone — triple the number in 2025. That trend is heading our way.
A new UN Environment Program report warns that global heating is now on track to reach at least 1.8°C, well above the “safe” limit of 1.5°C set in the Paris Agreement. Every fraction of a degree intensifies the extreme weather, droughts, glacier melt, ecosystem collapse, and sea level rise already underway.
The solutions exist. What’s missing is the political will to act at the speed and scale this moment demands — and that will has to start somewhere. It can start here in Meaford.
Project Drawdown’s Super High-Impact Initiative for Fixing Tomorrow (SHIFT) offers a research-backed guide to the actions each of us can take to help keep our planet livable. I’d urge every Meaford resident to look it up, pick one action, and start this week. Talk to your neighbours about it. Ask your local council candidates what they’re doing about emissions. Write to MP Alex Ruff & MPP Paul Vickers to let them know that you are concerned about global warming and climate change. Small, local pressure adds up to real political will.
Every fraction of a degree matters. Every ounce of emissions matters. Every choice and action matters. Let’s do what it takes to make each of our seasons genuinely, sustainably “fairly typical” in Meaford — and let’s not wait for someone else to start.
