The 3-Minute Financial Fix: Summer Perspective – Is Your Financial Plan Still on Track?

Submitted by: Glen Izzard, CIM; Investment Advisor, Portfolio Manager

Summer has a way of changing our pace.

Whether it’s a few days at the cottage, a family vacation, an afternoon on the golf course, or enjoying a quieter evening on the deck, this time of year often gives us something that’s hard to find during the rest of the year: perspective.

Away from the busyness of everyday life, it’s easier to think about where we’re headed. Not just over the next few months, but over the next five, ten, or twenty years.

That’s one of the reasons I believe summer is one of the best times of year to revisit your financial plan.

One of the most interesting things I’ve learned over the years is that peace of mind isn’t necessarily determined by how much money someone has. More often, it comes from knowing there’s a thoughtful plan in place; one that reflects your goals, your family, and the life you’re working toward.

Financial planning, at its core, isn’t really about money. It’s about having choices. It’s about feeling confident enough to enjoy today while knowing you’re preparing for tomorrow. Taking stock doesn’t have to be complicated.

Think of it like preparing for a road trip. Before setting out, most of us check our destination, review the route, and make sure we have enough fuel to get there. Along the way, we occasionally glance at the GPS, not because we’re lost, but to confirm we’re still on the best path.

A financial plan serves much the same purpose. It provides direction, helps you navigate life’s inevitable changes, and gives you confidence that you’re moving toward what’s most important to you.

As we reach the halfway point of the year, here are three simple ways to make the most of that summer perspective.

1. Take a Mid-Year Financial Review

Summer offers a natural opportunity to pause and reflect.

Are your savings and investments still aligned with your goals? Have your priorities changed? Have there been unexpected opportunities or challenges that deserve attention?

A review doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes just thirty minutes of reflection is enough to identify opportunities, uncover potential risks, and confirm you’re still heading in the right direction.

2. Have Conversations That Matter

Summer often creates space for conversations that don’t happen during the busyness of the rest of the year.

Whether you’re sitting around a campfire, enjoying dinner on the patio, or spending time with family at the cottage, it’s a wonderful opportunity to talk about the future.

What does retirement look like for you? How do you hope to spend your time? Would you like to help children or grandchildren achieve their goals? Are there experiences you’d still like to enjoy?

Interestingly, many families spend more time planning a two-week vacation than discussing the next twenty years of their financial future.

Summer offers a chance to change that.

3. Remember That Small Decisions Add Up

One of the biggest misconceptions about financial planning is that progress requires dramatic change. In reality, long-term success is usually built through a series of consistent decisions.

Reviewing your spending, adjusting your savings, updating beneficiary information, revisiting your estate plan, or simply having a conversation with a trusted advisor can all contribute to greater confidence over time. The small decisions we make often have the greatest impact.

Ultimately, your financial plan should support the life you want to live.

It should give you the freedom to spend time with family, travel without worry, enjoy retirement, support the people you care about, and focus less on financial uncertainty and more on what is important to you.

A review once or twice a year can help ensure you’re still on course, whatever the seasons ahead may bring.

Your Next Step

If it’s been a while since you’ve reviewed your financial plan or if you’ve never had one, summer is an excellent time to begin. Sometimes, all it takes is a conversation to bring clarity, confidence, and peace of mind for the years ahead.
