This Mother’s Day, My Friend’s House is launching a ten-day campaign that invites the community to reflect on a simple but deeply meaningful idea: home is where my mom is.
Running from May 1 through May 10, the Home Is Where My Mom Is campaign shines a light on the experiences of women and children navigating unsafe situations, and the courage it takes to seek something different.
“For many of us, home is something we rarely have to question,” said Ciara O’Connell, Senior Development Manager at My Friend’s House. “But for the families who come through our doors, home often begins at a turning point. A moment where a mother makes an incredibly difficult decision in order to protect her children.”
Each year, My Friend’s House supports women and children as they leave situations of gender-based violence and begin the process of rebuilding. Through a 24/7 crisis line, emergency shelter, counselling and ongoing support, the organization helps families move toward safety, stability, and a new beginning.
The campaign will unfold across social media, sharing reflections on what “home” can look like in moments of uncertainty, and highlighting the role community support plays in helping families move forward.
“This campaign is not about idealized versions of motherhood,” added O’Connell. “It’s about strength, protection, and the reality that every journey looks different. We want to create space for that, while also inviting our community to be part of the support system that makes change possible.”
Throughout the ten-day campaign, My Friend’s House will share perspectives that focus on compassion, dignity, and understanding. Community members are encouraged to follow along, learn more, and consider supporting the organization’s work.
“Every act of support helps ensure that when a family makes the decision to seek safety, they are not doing it alone,” O’Connell added.
