Coyote Runner Competes at Canadian Indoor Track & Field Championships

On the weekend of February 27 to March 1, York University hosted the Canadian Indoor Track and Field Championships. The event was open to athletes in Grade 8 and above who had met the qualifying standards. More than 1,050 athletes registered to compete in this prestigious national competition, including Georgian Bay Coyote Richard Saunders.

Several elite Canadian athletes were also in attendance to inspire the next generation, including Olympians Damien Warner, Sarah Mitton, and Pierce LePage.

Saunders, a dedicated member of the Coyotes, has steadily built valuable racing experience over his years with the team, and was ready to test his training against a highly competitive field.

Coaches encouraged Saunders to take a conservative start, focusing on maintaining steady splits, and not worrying about placement — instead embracing the opportunity to compete alongside top athletes. He executed the plan beautifully. At the gun, Saunders settled near the back of his heat of ten runners. He showed excellent control over the opening lap, and because of that patience, he was able to maintain consistent pacing throughout the ten-lap, 2,000m race.

As the race unfolded and competitors began to fatigue, Saunders moved up strategically, making several strong passes and keeping himself in contention. With a surge over the final lap, he crossed the line in fourth place, shaving an impressive 19 seconds off his previous personal best.

Twenty-five U16 athletes competed in the event, and Saunders’ time ranked him 17th overall — a commendable finish for an athlete competing in the younger year of the division.

It was exciting to witness Richard’s debut on the national stage, and coaches look forward to seeing what the future holds for this promising young runner,” said the team.
