GBCS Students Participate in Terry Fox Run

On Wednesday, September 25, the 1,200 students at Georgian Bay Community School took part in the 43rd annual Terry Fox run. Many students did a ‘rock and run’ on the track and tarmac while others hiked the Georgian trail. In class, they spent time learning about Terry’s life and his incredible perseverance despite pain and sickness, and many came away having internalized the Terry Fox Foundation’s slogan #Try like Terry.

Students were excited about this event, not only because it honours a Canadian hero, but also because there were some great fundraising prizes offered. The school set an overall goal of raising $2,000. Students were told that if they reached the $1,500 mark, there would be extra recess time and that if they reached the $2,000 goal, the principal and vice-principals would receive a pie in the face.

As of the run day, we had well surpassed the goal and the number continues to climb. Cheers erupted from classes after the run as the announcement was made that the pies would be flying next Friday,” said organizers.

Many thanks go out to all those who donated and to those who participated in keeping Terry’s vision of fundraising for Cancer research alive.
