Sad About The Cedars

Editor,

The renovation to the old fire hall has been amazing to watch. The townspeople have been excited to see how beautiful it looks and I was personally very impressed by the care that was taken to do it right.

A recent article in On The Bay magazine provided great details about the renovation process and it was interesting to read and to learn that the owner of the property was really honouring the building by not cutting corners.

When it opens, Meaford will have a great dining destination (hopefully) and a beautiful building will have new life. Which is WHY….the cedar hedge??

Seriously? This hedge was simply appeared one day. Not only does it block the beautiful architectural features from the street, it is NOT in keeping with the building itself. It has, in my opinion, seriously compromised the aesthetic integrity of the project.

Throwing up an poorly thought out hedge after literally months of careful design work on a heritage building is very upsetting to many people in town. The cedars with grow higher and higher, eventually obscuring the building even more.

Landscaping decisions are integral to good design. On behalf of all the folks I have talked to, I am hoping that the owner will realize this blunder and remove the cedars so the beautiful building he so carefully renovated is open to the street and jumps out to embrace us instead of being cloistered behind a suburban style cedar hedge.
