On Thursday June 27, MPP Rick Byers took to the stage just before the Roxy Theatre’s production of ‘Sound of Stars’ began, to formally congratulate the theatre on the work it’s done since receiving a $197,000 Resilient Communities Fund grant in 2022 from the province’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). A portion of the grant was used by the Owen Sound Little Theatre and the Roxy Star Company, to create a performance-based program for adults with disabilities in Grey and Bruce Counties to showcase their performing skills in front of an audience.
“Congratulations to the Roxy Theatre on your success in receiving the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant. It is so exciting to see the important ways this support is being used for programs and operations,” said MPP Rick Byers.
The two-year long OTF grant helped the theatre company with several tasks ranging from recruiting, training, and supporting its volunteers and staff, to meeting enhanced health and safety protocols, and then finally to expand programming for adults with disabilities and youth. And regarding the latter, the grant ensured all expenses were covered from rental space, show materials, t-shirts for participants, and tech requirements.
“This program would not be possible without this grant,” said Lacey Mooney, Star Company Coordinator. “Not having to worry about any financial concerns has allowed us to create a memorable program that is life-changing for everyone involved.”
The Roxy Star Company is part of The Roxy/Owen Sound Little Theatre in Owen Sound.
