Projecting Ahead to 2035 for Electric Vehicles

Editor,

The Government of Canada is mandating all new cars manufactured in 2035 be electric. Presently there are 9.4 million cars operating in Ontario. I believe it would be a very conservative estimate to assume there will be 1 million electric cars (EVs) by 2035 in Ontario. There are already 270,000. Most of these cars will be charged overnight. A 10-kilowatt charger will take about 8 hours to fully charge an EV. The energy required therefore to charge one million EVs will be 10 million kilowatts which is 10 thousand megawatts.

By 2035, our beloved Pumped Storage facility will be ready for commissioning having spent at least 8 billion dollars to complete. It will require 1,490 megawatts of energy each night to fill its reservoir.

I will respectfully request… Meaford’s well-informed Councillors who granted “Willing Host” status to TC Energy, AND/OR any member of TC Energy’s “honest” promotional staff members, AND/OR any other proponents of this project to explain why we will need to be using almost 1,500 megawatts of electrical energy to pump water uphill for the next 50 to 100 years when there will be a massive and continuously growing demand for overnight electricity as future decades are upon us? We will ultimately need 100 thousand megawatts of energy to charge Ontario’s 10 million future EVs.

One does not require a science or mathematics degree to realize that we need to be spending the likes of 8 billion dollars on generating additional energy, instead of turning 490,000 Kilowatts of existing energy into waste heat and discharging it into Georgian Bay. So, why are we approving this?

Folks, how much more simple logic do you require to conclude this multi-billion-dollar project is a complete waste of money? Don’t allow this corporation fixated on “profits at any cost” to do your thinking for you. You’re being misled and coerced with promises of short-term commerce to essentially “look the other way” while they implement their long-term monetary extraction process upon Ontario Taxpayers.

Can we please put an end to this madness?

Stephen Carr, Meaford
