A new exhibit featuring the work of the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts’ Plein Air Group is coming to the Gallery on August 9, at 65 Simcoe Street.
Showcasing paintings from 25 local artists, the show will feature scenes depicted from the South Georgian Bay area.
The Plein Air Group was founded two years ago by the BMFA membership. Beginning in May
2023, artists have been meeting every week at different scenic spots across the region including the Pease Marsh, Wasaga Beach, Meaford Harbour, the Collingwood Terminals, the Collingwood Train Station, and the Arboretum. The Plein Air Group includes 40 members, 25 of which will be showcasing at this exhibition.
Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts has been dedicated to enhancing the cultural landscape of our community by promoting and supporting artistic expression in all its forms for the past 47 years. Their goal is to inspire excellence in visual arts through educational and creative opportunities. They support and promote the work of 230 members through annual community events, juried shows, workshops, art talks, mentoring, and operating an art shop and gallery in downtown Collingwood. The membership are talented artists of all ages who work in a wide range of creative fields. Through impactful programs and initiatives, they strive to be a catalyst for positive change, fostering creativity and inclusivity in our society.
Plein Air is a French expression meaning “in the Open Air” and refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. Plein Air artists incorporate natural light and colours into their work to capture the feel of the landscape. Plein air came to prominence in the 18th century when oil paint began to be manufactured in tubes of paint, making painting outdoors easier.
Some notable BMFA member artists participating in the show are Jesse Unsworth, John David Anderson, Merryn Edgar, Brian Buckrell, Heather Smiley, and David Rawlings.
When: August 9 – September 8. There will be a reception and opening at the BMFA Gift Shop on August 9 from 4 – 6 p.m.
