Do you plan meals ahead of time? Do you make meals with new and exciting ingredients? Do you cook with your children? March is Nutrition Month, the perfect time to be inspired in the kitchen!

Registered dietitians across the country support cooking basics and passing on of these skills to others. Everyone can join in by downloading Dietitians of Canada’s free apps Cookspiration and eaTipster to get tips and recipe ideas.

A 2012 Ipsos-Reid survey by Dietitians of Canada found 58 percent of Canadians always or very often cook a balanced meal for themselves or their families. But are we using basic ingredients to cook “from scratch” or are we “assembling” meals from pre-packaged and prepared foods?

We are spending less time cooking meals from scratch and instead we rely on processed and convenience foods. Cooking homemade meals can improve diet; however a lack of confidence in food skills, limited time and lack of ideas prevent many people from making homemade meals.

The Grey Bruce Health Unit invites everyone to join them on Facebook and Twitter for Nutrition Month.

Let’s start a conversation on eating well. Show us your skills and share your tips and recipes to inspire others to create tasty meals and snacks. Later this month, look for more information on our photo contest on Facebook or Twitter. Also enter to win Health Canada’s Eat Well Recipe Contest at www.eatwellrecipecontest.com and submit your recipe by midnight on March 8, 2014,” said the Health Unit.
