If You Want Throw-Away Packaging, it’ll Cost

Letter to the Editor

Editor,

I am a long time consultant in the environment and recycling industry.

I was just reading the article on adding film plastic and styrofoam to the BB curbside collection. I am supportive of adding these materials to curbside collection (I support the user pay concept).

A statement in the article that film and styrofoam are being added ‘at no extra cost’, is incorrect. There may not be an immediate charge to the householder to add the material in October, but your readers should not be misled to believe that the high cost of collecting these materials will not be passed through to them – likely in the next budget cycle or contract renewal with a waste management company.

It is well known and documented in the municipal recycling business that the inclusion of these hard to recycle materials increases the cost of recycling programs dramatically.

People should be delivered the message – if you want to buy things in throwaway packaging, they will have to pay for it.

Sincerely

Rick Findlay, Meaford
