Pan Am Torch Relay is Coming to Meaford

By Stephen Vance, Staff

pachi torch relayThe last time a torch was run through the streets of Meaford, those wanting to witness the event had to set their alarm clock for very early in the morning, and they had to bundle up to stay warm as they awaited the Winter Olympics torchbearer to arrive.

Next week, a different torch, for a different event will arrive in Meaford as part of the build-up to the 2015 Pan Am Games which are being held in Toronto this summer.

The festivities will begin on June 11 at 3:30 pm – no early alarm, and shorts and sandals should provide enough protection against the elements this time around.

The torch will arrive from Collingwood and will make its first stop at Bill’s Valu-mart where there will be refreshments and product samples available, and there will also be opportunities for taking photos.

The Pan Am torch will then be carried by Barb and Elizabeth McDonald to the Harbour Pavilion, where it scheduled to arrive at approximately 4:30 pm. After some photo opportunities with local dignitaries, the torch will be transferred to Hannah Woodhouse, Meaford’s official community torchbearer. Woodhouse has participated in, and won many competitions, including a National Indoor Track Champion Title in the 3000m and 1500m. Hannah also participated in the Canadian Junior Cross Country Championships held in Vancouver, BC, and represented Canada at the 2015 World Junior Cross Country Championships in Guiyang, China.
