A locally prepared roast beef dinner will be feeding people in our own community and around the world at the same time. Chef Gilles Haché is teaming up with the local Bighead River Foodgrains Project to offer a take-out meal after being approached to be part of a fundraiser for the organization.
Known for his generosity in the local community, Haché feels it is important to reach out beyond our borders to assist others as well. “We have an obligation as Christians to help all people,” says Haché. “and I am very excited to reach out in this way.”
Henry Reinders, chair of the organization, is grateful to Haché for his enthusiasm and support.
“The World Food Programme is warning that we are facing the worst humanitarian food crisis since WWII as a result of the pandemic,” says Reinders. who is also the Ontario Regional Representative for Canadian Foodgrains Bank. “It is critical that we take steps now to avert a major hunger pandemic.”
Canadian Foodgrains Bank is a Canadian charity made up of 15 churches and church-based agencies working together to end global hunger. The local Bighead River group is one of over 200 growing projects across Canada that raises funds for the Foodgrains Bank.
Reinders has been on trips overseas to see the work of the Foodgrains Bank. “Not only are they reaching out with emergency food assistance in war torn countries and weather devasted regions, they are also engaging in long term response programs to help people achieve food security,” says Reinders. “One small-scale farmer told us the productivity on his 2 acre farm increased by 600% after he learned conservation agriculture techniques through Foodgrains sponsored programs.”
