Staff

Walkingphoto2019 270The Meaford Public Library is issuing a challenge – can we as a community, walk the length of the Great Wall of China this summer?

On Thursday, June 20 at 6 pm, the library will host an information meeting in the library board room. They will be joined by Jason Weppler, Health Promoter with the Grey Bruce Health Unit to discuss the health benefits of walking.

Then on to the challenge – can we as a community walk 21,196.18 km, which is the length of the Great Wall of China? And please be assured, you don’t have to go to China to participate.

This walking challenge begins Friday, June 21 and ends on Saturday, August 31. You record your steps each day. Add up the weekly total and send that total to asolecki@meaford.ca.

You can use your own step-counter, app, or borrow a pedometer from the Meaford Public Library to keep track of your steps.

The key figures to know are that 21,196.18 km (the length of the Great Wall) is approximately 27,816,509 steps.

You can register for the program anytime throughout the summer and it is open to everyone – adults, children, families, etc. You don’t have to attend the Information meeting in order to participate.

In a little more than 11 weeks, by working together, the community will try to reach its goal of walking 21,196.18 km. The library will post regular updates about the progress of the challenge on social media and by email to the participants. The final step count/distance reached will be revealed at the Meaford Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, September 7, 2019.

For more information on this event, please contact the Meaford Public Library at 519-538-1060 ext. 1123, email: libraryinfo@meaford.ca or go to the library website: www.meafordlibrary.on.ca.
