Meaford Councillor Paul Vickers has announced his intention to seek the Conservative nomination in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.
Vickers has a life-long connection to the riding. After receiving a diploma in Agriculture from the University of Guelph, he returned to the area and officially took over the family farm in 1988, expanding and increasing the efficiency of the operation over the past several years.
He has taken an active leadership role in the dairy industry, and was a Director with Gay Lea Foods Co-operative from 2001 until 2016. He chaired the Audit and Governance committees, and led the organization as Chair of the Board in 2014 and 2015. Gay Lea Foods Co-operative is an $800 million dairy processing co-operative.
Serving the community runs in the family. Paul’s father Harman was a local Deputy Reeve and member of Grey County Council. Paul recently ran successfully in his first election to win a seat on the Municipality of Meaford Council in November 2018.
Paul had no intentions of running federally in the seat long-held by MP Larry Miller, but when Miller announced his retirement last month, he knew there was a window of opportunity to ensure area residents would continue to have a strong advocate in Ottawa.
“I look forward to working with the party membership throughout this nomination process, and I would be honoured to represent the people of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound in the next federal election.”
Paul has been engaged locally with the Conservatives for the past three years as a Director with the Conservative Riding Association for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.
Paul and his wife Karen, an employee at GBHS Meaford site, have been married for 27 years and have four children. Paul spent many years as a hockey coach while their children were growing up, which gave him an opportunity to meet families across the riding as he travelled with the teams.
