On Monday, July 9, the Meaford Lawn Bowling Club hosted their Annual Muxlow Open Pairs Tournament.

Under very warm sunny skies, eight teams from Chesley, Owen Sound, and Meaford competed. At the end of the day, Meaford lawn bowlers were prevalent in the winners list, taking first, second, and third places.

The winners of the tournament were Bill Bouwman and Lynda Eagles from Meaford. In second, Rea Best and Jim Davis, Meaford. Dan Dekking and Paul Warrick, Meaford, came third. In fourth place were Eric and Sandy Weatherall from Chesley and the Consolation went to Mike Gvildys and Mac Robinson of Owen Sound. For more information check out our Facebook page.

On the weekend leading up to the Muxlow tournament, the Collingwood Lawn Bowling Club invited the Meaford club to participate in their annual Veterans’ Appreciation Day Open Bowling Tournament on Saturday, July 7. It was a mixed jitney format, which means all of the players’ names, male and female, are drawn to form teams according to their preferred position. Each team consisted of a lead, vice, and skip and many were a mixture of the two clubs.

The opening ceremonies were impressive. The town crier kicked things off with a veteran at his side; a piper led the parade of athletes around the green; then Mayor Sandra Cooper said a few words of welcome.

The weather cooperated fully with sunshine and a breeze, and in spite of the recent drought, the greens were in great shape.

After three exciting draws the points were tallied with the following results: In first place, 3 Game High, Wayne Holly, Collingwood, Joe Graham, Collingwood, and Morris Hand, Meaford. In second place, 2 Game High, were Bill Scott, Collingwood, Owen McBride, Collingwood, and Jeanne Burch, Meaford. Bill Bouwman, Meaford, Ingrid McBride, Collingwood, and Les Noble, Collingwood, took 3rd place, Second 2 Game High. Consolation, 1 Game Aggregate went to Lynne Lundberg, Audrey Dobie, and Alana Warwick, all of Meaford.
