Great Expectations for Your Game

Great Expectations for Your GameWe all have high expectations for the upcoming golf season. Every year we get the opportunity to start with a clean slate, hoping that this year our game will be better than last year.

Many of us hope not only to play more rounds of golf this season, but also to lower our scores.

When you set your expectations too high for any sport, then you put too much pressure on yourself to perform. Falling short of your expectations will often lead to disappointment and cause you to question your abilities and affect your self-confidence.

This season, the best way to prevent disappointment in your golf game is to prepare a game plan. Start by setting some realistic goals for yourself in 2018. Realistic goals might include becoming a better putter, or improving your drives from the tee. You may also set a goal to finally break 100, 90 or even 80 for the first time in your life. To achieve goals in life you first must commit them to writing. Next, determine what it is going to take in terms of action to achieve that goal. Reaching your goals might mean purchasing some new equipment, taking some lessons, or even practising on a more regular basis.

Finally set a schedule which includes a time line for your success. You want to make sure your performance is progressing as the season goes on. Phil Mickelson hit the nail on the head when he said, “How do you expect your performance to change if you are not willing to make changes in your game!”

After just a few rounds of golf this spring, all golfers feel it. Frustration, disappointment, and sometimes questioning your own self-confidence are enough to make you realize that change can be a good thing.

This season if you wish to reach your performance goals, then be willing to change your behaviour both on and off the golf course. Stick to your game plan, work hard on your game and finally achieving your goals will be your reward!
