Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
I’m not at all surprised but still disturbed at the already increased cost of the new library.
There’s no doubt that Meaford library needs a new home and initially it seemed that the Sykes Street OPP option was reasonable at $3-4 million, even with the certainty that costs always exceed original predictions.
Now, with a change of location, the projected cost is getting scary indeed.
Especially ironic is the fact that 1.5 km from the centre of town was too far for Meaford library users but many of these same folks felt it was quite reasonable for Sydenham residents to drive 30 km to use Meaford’s library.
I sincerely hope that council and staff will explore every possible cost-cutting measure while proceeding with the new library and related renovations of existing buildings to new uses and not count too much on the speedy sale of 390 Sykes St .
