A Poetic Perspective on the History of Owen Sound

Staff

Brownfields, a new collection of poetry which provides a unique poetic perspective on the history of Owen Sound, will be launched at The Ginger Press on Friday November 14 at 7:00pm. Written by Richard-Yves Sitoski, Brownfields charts the community through the ages of exploration, colonization, prosperity and uncertainty.

Inspired by local brownfield sites – contaminated former industrial lots that are often too costly to remediate and so remain undeveloped – Sitoski set out to explore why it is that Owen Sound evolved the way it did. “Why did some of his town’s most vital and celebrated industries wither and die, leaving vast, unsightly scars on the landscape?” he asks. His investigations led him back to the mythical past and pointed to an unsettled future.

Originally from Ottawa, Richard-Yves Sitoski has called Owen Sound home since 2010. With a background in Classical Studies, he has taught at Queen’s University and for the Bluewater District School Board. His poetry has appeared in publications in Canada, the United States and Great Britain. This is his first book.

Published by The Ginger Press, Brownfields provides another perspective of local history. Focusing on books which explore Owen Sound and district, The Ginger Press has published over 75 books since 1987. Everyone is welcome to attend the launch. Autographed copies of Brownfields ($18.95) can be reserved at 376-4233.
