On November 6, Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call from a Meaford resident reporting they had been scammed out of $65.99 in the ‘Microsoft Scam”.
After receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, and advising her that her computer had a virus, the unsuspecting victim disclosed her debit card information to the fraudster to pay for the fix. A total $65.99 was taken from her account. After realizing it was a scam, the debit card was cancelled.
“Many scammers try to trick you into providing your banking and personal details. Never provide personal information or banking information to anybody you don’t know and trust,” said the OPP.
Anyone receiving a phone call of this nature should simply hang up.
If you are having problems with your computer, locate a reputable computer repair business for assistance.
