Try Curling This Winter

Staff

Try Curling This WinterMost people have been fascinated by watching curling on TV, and there are many who would like to try this great game for themselves.

Well, you can, and without too much financial risk by signing up with Meaford Curling Club as a novice. For only $95.00, a person can curl for the first draw (session) which runs from early November to Christmas and if they wish to continue, the money would be applied toward a full beginner’s membership of $220, and their season would be extended to the end of March.

At the beginning of the season there is a beginners clinic to explain the rules and the how-to of curling. Once the season starts, members are more than willing to coach those who may need a bit of encouragement. Equipment costs are reasonable, and initially it is possible to borrow or rent equipment from the club. Full membership for experienced curlers is only $275.00 for the season.

There are so many positives to the game that they are almost endless,” says the Curling Club. “To begin with, one can curl at just about any age. The club has kids in junior programmes from as young as five, to seniors in their late eighties, and the game can be played at whatever pace the participant chooses.”

For those with mobility issues, they can curl using a stick, like shuffleboard. There is even a youth team from the high school, which the club supports. It is also a very social event with lots of laughter and after the game curlers gather in the lounge over a drink to chat and relax before heading home. For those with a competitive nature, there are leagues to cater to them, along with out-of-town bonspiels.

Most people have busy schedules, so there are daytime as well as evening games and throughout the season there are bonspiels, some of them being to raise money for local charities. All in all, this is a very inclusive sport and a great way to get some much needed winter exercise.

This year one can register on line by going to meafordcurling.ca, or in person by showing up at the club on either Thursday, October 6th or Tuesday, October 11th between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm. On both these evenings an information desk will be open to answer questions. If you would like to know more, you can phone 519-538-2304.
