Young Meaford Performer Ready for CNE Rising Star Talent Competition

T.S. Giilck

Having made a name for herself in the local area, a youthful Meaford performer is getting set to show she has the “Wright” stuff.

Twelve-year-old Emma Wright has earned a shot at participating in the Canadian National Exhibition’s Rising Star Talent Competition.

The competition is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and will run from August 19 to Septeptember 5 on the CNE grounds. The competition gives young and rising talents a moment in the spotlight as they seek both prize money and exposure.

The prizes range from $1,000 to $2,500, but the chance to be seen in such a forum is likely more valuable in the long run.

“I am really excited. It’s a great opportunity to meet new artists and people that have the same passion as me,” Emma said.

She explained the CNE Rising Star Competition is done by auditions.

“Each year the CNE advertises for their talent search thru Facebook and the media. In order to audition you must send in a video of yourself performing.”

So, being a youth with some social media savvy, that’s exactly what she did.

“I have been singing since I was four years old and take vocal lessons from Tara Mackenzie and guitar from Jayden Grahlman,” Emma said. “I love country music but am open to singing any type of genre.”

She was quick to add that none of this would have been possible without the assistance of friends and family.

“Everyone is very supportive and lots of my local friends and family love to come out to watch me sing wherever I might be at.”

As for what winning the contest and the future holds for her musically, Emma said that’s difficult to day with any precision.

“I am only 12 years old so it’s hard to say (if she’d like to make a career in music) right now. It’s definitely something I have a passion for and love to do.”

Emma will also be performing at the next Market Square concert on Aug. 26.
