In 1979 there were 500,000 cases of paralytic polio in the world each year. The disease was endemic in 125 countries and was paralysing 1,000 children a day.
That year Rotary International started its immunization program and today there are only two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan that reported new cases this year – 28 cases in Pakistan and 5 in Afghanistan.
Rotary International through its Polio Plus campaign has raised the money and conducted immunization clinics and with its partners WHO and UNICEF is working to eradicate polio by the end of 2018.
