On Wednesday, September 30th Knights’ Home Building Centre in Meaford will be the host site for the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual Pigs of Hope fundraiser.

From 8am until 2pm you will be able to drop by Knights to pick out your Pig.

They’re not live pigs but cute little pink piggy banks being used to raise money for the local Wheels of Hope Transportation program that provides rides to cancer patients for treatment and related appointments.

The piggy banks can be adopted by a school, an organization a business, a group of co-workers or a family. Each bank comes with adoption papers and a fundraising goal. The idea is to drop your spare change in the pig during the month of October or ask family, friends, co-workers or clients to help you reach your goal. Each piggy bank represents a return trip cost for a client to travel. There are several trips to choose from when adopting your piggy bank.

In 2014 The Wheels of Hope program had 115 volunteer drivers that travelled 749,349 kms to provide 5,907 safe rides to cancer-related appointments for 425 people diagnosed with cancer. Transportation assistance was provided to 11 families with children with cancer for 156 trips to treatment.

The pigs will need to be returned by November 2nd to Knights’ or brought to The Canadian Cancer Society office at 920 1st Ave West or to the location you adopted your pig. If you can’t make it but would like to adopt a piggy bank, please call our office at 376-6011.

We understand not everyone is able to adopt a piggy bank, but there is another way to help. Simply log onto http://convio.cancer.ca/goto/PigsofHope2015 and make your donation to the program.
