When I moved to Meaford back in September I made a promise to myself to smile. All the time. At everyone.
I mean really, what’s not to smile about?
Meaford is truly the sweetest town in Ontario and this comes from a girl who toured with her band for ten years and probably played just about every other town in Ontario (and beyond).
Which brings me to Simply Unique, and Nancy.
You see, it’s my cousin’s fault that I moved here, so feel free to blame her if you’re in any way offended by my non-stop smiling (and yes, that’s me, the blonde in white sunglasses walking my goofy Golden Doodle every day, smiling and waving at everyone).
She and her hubby Dave discovered this little corner of paradise a few years ago and relocated. I visited them last year (only because I was skiing Blue and it seemed rude not to) and BAM – here I am, smiling, walking and renovating.
So on my first day of full-time residency, Joanne (good cousin/friend that she is) delivers a spectacular housewarming arrangement created by her new pal Nancy at Simply Unique. And since I’m curious (some might say nosey), smiley and friendly I decide to pop in to check out this funky floral emporium.
Before you can say “Scarecrow” Nancy (the lovely proprietress) and I are chatting up a storm, I’m buying carnations and a new friendship is forged.
Fast forward a few months. The festive season is upon us and I am just about the most festive gal you’re ever going to meet so I throw my first Meaford Christmas soiree and invite Nancy.
It’s probably important that you know that Nancy and I have never actually socialized. I just pop in, we chat, sometimes I buy stuff sometimes and that’s about it. But I like her and I see friendship potential.
Unfortunately, she has a previous family commitment and declines. And then, a few days before my party, Meaford Magic happens. Nancy shows up at my doorstep with a floral delivery. Lovely greens and whites in a sparkling silver vase. Huh? From whom, I query? “Read the card,” she responds laughingly.
And so I do. The flowers are from Nancy, thanking me for the invitation and wishing me a beautiful first Christmas in Meaford.
And I cry.
