Curbside Pickup for Plastic Film, Styrofoam, and Kitty Litter Starts October 5

waste collectionBeginning October 5, Meaford residents will be able to add Styrofoam, plastic film, and cat litter to the weekly curbside recycling and organics waste pickup.

A second component of the new curbside pickup program, large or bulky item pickup will begin in April of 2016. The following regulations will apply.

Plastic Film
Plastic film can be disposed of in the recycling bin at no extra cost. The municipality asks that you bundle all plastic film into one plastic bag, tie it closed, and place the bag inside of your blue box. You should also ensure the plastic film is clean of food products and that any stickers, labels, zippers, seals or drawstrings have been removed or cut off.

What is accepted:

  • Bread bags

  • Shopping bags

  • Newspaper sleeves

  • Shrink wrap

  • Green garbage bags

  • Film covering from food products

  • Salt, fertilizer and topsoil bags

  • Cling wrap

What is not Accepted:

  • Non-stretchy plastic (makes crinkle noise)

  • Beverage rings

  • Chip, cookie, chocolate and snack bar wrappers

  • Biodegradable or compostable plastics

  • Bottle seals

Styrofoam

As of October 5, you will also be able to place white packaging Styrofoam in a clear plastic bag, tie it closed, and place at your curbside for recycling at no extra cost. Residents will be permitted two bags of Styrofoam disposal per week. Please also remove all labels, plastic and strings from Styrofoam.

What is accepted:

  • White packaging Styrofoam pieces

What is not accepted:

  • Packing Peanuts (box packaging)

  • Meat Trays

  • Styrofoam plates & cups

Kitty Litter

Kitty Litter can be disposed of in the green bin at no extra cost. It must be placed in a compostable bag, and placed in the organics green bin. Soiled kitty litter including cat waste material will be accepted. Dog waste material is not permitted.

Bulky Items

Starting in 2016, Bulky Items will be collected at the curbside seven times per year between April and October on designated days. Residents will be asked to contact the Municipal office to schedule bulky item pickup.

Further information on bulky item pickup, including dates and applicable fees, will be included in the annual Waste Management Guide to be released in January 2016.

  • Dehumidifiers/ Humidifiers

  • Dishwashers

  • Hot water tanks

  • Freezers and Refrigerators

  • Metal desks

  • Stoves / Washer/ Dryers

  • Bed Frames

  • Cabinets

  • Carpet & underpad

  • Chairs & sofas

  • Dressers & vanities

  • Exercise equipment

  • Floor & table lamps

  • Tables

  • Lawn furniture

  • Linoleum

  • Mattresses & box springs

  • Wood pallets

What is not accepted:

  • Construction waste

  • Electronic Waste

  • Hazardous Waste

  • Propane tanks

  • Tire or Automobile parts

  • Tree stumps

  • Concrete or Bricks

  • Shingles

The Municipality of Meaford will also be hosting the following information sessions regarding the curbside pickup of new Styrofoam, plastic film, kitty litter, and bulky items:
