I first met Rob Tardik when my regular guitar player bailed on a gig in order to get married or have a baby or something.
Oh wait – he had to Feng Shui his garden, that was it. Anyway, Rob was beckoned to take over and I could tell immediately the boy had some serious chops. Man, talk about flying fingers!
Rob then brought Carson Freeman to my world. Truly one of most talented sax players in Canada, Carson oozes charisma and charm, both on stage and off. He is also hilariously funny and a delight to work with.
Fast forward a few years and Rob and Carson are both big winners at the 2010 Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. I couldn’t be more proud of my “boys” and am both surprised and thrilled that they’re still willing to gig with me on occasion. And then comes the really big prize – they introduce me to Davor Jordanovski. Macedonian by birth and a Canadian for some twelve years now, Davor is a powerhouse producer (Rob’s latest two CDs), keyboardist and songwriter whose Mississauga studio is chock-full of Macedonian “Grammys”.
Davor not only started playing with me, we wrote music together and eventually produced Vickie van Dyke & Friends “Simply Christmas” – 18 tracks featuring not only Rob, Carson and Davor but a plethora of jazz talent including Grammy-winner Paul Brown, Juno-winner Alfie Zappacosta, Emmy-winner Don Breithaupt, Smooth Jazz-winners and nominees Gabriel Mark Hasselbach, Allistair Elliott, Chris Smith, Ali Matthews and more. All proceeds from this labour of love went to charity. As a matter of fact, they still do, and the CD will be available for purchase at all Jazz For Joe events.
And that brings us to Sunday April 22 – the first fundraising concert for The Beautiful Joe Heritage Society. Yes music lovers – Jazz For Joe is coming to Meaford (McGinty’s Upstairs) and Rob Tardik is our first headliner.
Born and raised in Toronto, Rob began playing the guitar at the age of 7. At 17 he received a high school music scholarship and went on to study music at York University in Toronto. Rob also holds diplomas in both Recording Engineering and in Media Arts from Humber College. Along with the prestigious Smooth Jazz Award for 2010 Guitarist of the Year, Rob was also named Mississauga’s 2007 “Established Performer of the Year”, an award won previously by Oscar Peterson and Rik Emmett.
With musical influences as diverse as Larry Carlton, Paco De Lucia, George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sting and Eddie Van Halen, Rob’s 3rd CD “Balance, Energy, Laughter, Love (B.EL.L.)” is an amalgamation of these inspirations and several single releases have already blasted up Billboard’s charts. Get ready for a spirited performance of original music, a few covers and a whole lot of fun! This is not your typical “shut up and clap after every solo” jazz. This is high energy R&B infused jazzy funk; energetic and highly danceable. And if you like a few jazz standards thrown in for good measure, I’ll be there to warble with my boys. I can’t wait.
