Grey County OPP received a report of an assault at the corner of Sykes and Collingwood streets on Wednesday evening (July 31).
“The victim and two male friends were sitting at a picnic table at the corner of Collingwood Street and Sykes Street North when the suspect, who was not known to the group of men, threatened to assault them for allegedly staring at him as he walked by,” said Grey County OPP Media Relations Officer Alina Grelik in a press release issued Thursday. “The group rebuffed the suspect, who then punched the victim in the face, before leaving the scene. The victim, 21, of North York, Ontario did not require medical attention.”
Through the investigation, the suspect was identified and arrested for assault on Sykes Street North a few minutes later. Officers located a steak knife in the waist band of the suspect’s shorts.
The 27 year old Collingwood man was transported to the Meaford OPP Detachment where he was held pending a bail hearing. The man, who is known to police, was charged with assault, carrying a concealed weapon and breach of probation under the Criminal Code.
