Lawn bowling season has begun, but this summer there is something a little different. Everyone in the community has been invited to try lawn bowling at the Meaford Lawn Bowling Club’s Open House Week and National Bowls Day, and many people accepted the offer.
The club is going strong. So what is different this summer? On Friday nights from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. beginning June 7, there will be a “4,3,2,1” fun competition for ages 19-39 for a $10 fee. It may seem strange to limit the fun to 19 to 39 year-olds but there is a very good reason.
“We have a great junior program for ages 6 to 18 in July and August, and in June, community school elementary classes will learn to lawn bowl. We have a wonderful adult program that offers lawn bowling four times a week and is well attended by folks who are middle-aged and seniors,” said the club. “So here’s the thing. All of our older members wish they had known about lawn bowling sooner. So our goal is to introduce lawn bowling to the 19 – 39 year-olds so they can enjoy the game for many, many years recreationally or competitively. Some time ago people had the idea that lawn bowling was for seniors, which created this age gap right across the country. In clubs where there are bowlers in this age group, there is a lot of excitement, because those younger bowlers are winning national championships.”
Meaford Lawn Bowling Club wants to fill that age gap while still encouraging people of all ages to join us. There is something for everyone. It’s fun, it’s exercise, it’s outdoors and it’s social. There is no commitment to a league. You just come when you can, and as often as you want. The club supplies the equipment. It’s the sporting world’s great equalizer. You don’t have to be super tall or super strong or super fast. You just have to want to play.
