Reader: Pumped Storage is not ‘Green’

Dear Editor,

I was not surprised to read Dr. David Fraser’s letter of Oct. 26th, regarding TCE. TCE will put whatever spin they can come up with regarding the Pumped Storage Project. The fact remains that this is NOT a “green” project by any stretch. Aside from the fact that this is not a “producer” of electricity, but rather it will use roughly 30% more energy than it produces, the construction process alone will release a huge amount of CO2 and contribute to climate change.

“As a material that creates the majority of the world’s bridges, roads, dams, and construction, concrete releases an extreme amount CO2 each year. It’s the highest consumed product on earth besides water. Until the overall emissions are cut worldwide, the environment will continue to be polluted with over 4 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide annually due to this industry, far greater than the aviation industry.

The above is quoted from Keegan Ramsden, Princeton University, November 3, 2020.
