The reason politicians, from local to federal, spend so much time discussing items of no worth is simple. Such subjects require little thought, can be dragged out for hours but above all, they push forward more meaningful items to another day.
I wish I had been party to the discussion on fonts at council. I would have been greatly amused. I love fonts. I have spent most of my life working with them, understanding the psychology of them, and have spent copious amounts of money taking courses to grasp the impact they can have on the reader.
To hear a bunch of councillors pontificating on something they know nothing about must have been priceless. Still, to your point I agree that we cannot pretend to be something we are not, and there is a limit to the extent council should have on our freedoms, not to mention the fact that they should also abide by the rules they set.
