It’s not about fentanyl or even illegal immigration. That is just meat he feeds the MAGA hats. It’s becoming very clear to me that he believes in the old theory of “Manifest Destiny”. He wants to be emperor/king of everything north of the “Gulf of America”. He thinks Canada should be the next US state. He plans to use economic pressure to make it happen.
Is he really that stupid? Yes I believe so…
In my opinion, his tariffs would be a small price to pay to avoid becoming a US state and having to deal with the political foolishness, high crime rates, daily mass shootings, unaffordable health care and meds, erosion of human rights especially women’s rights, irrational gun laws, constant election cycles funded by billionaires, climate change denial, environmental destruction and a legal system that does not apply to billionaires.
Canada has several political parties and provinces that rarely agree on anything and is in a vulnerable place right now but he has succeeded in uniting them to push back on him and his growing collection of idiots. (Yes now even Alberta is onside.)
Canada and Mexico are well prepared with lists of countervailing tariffs to share the pain on both sides of the border. The North American auto industry will be devastated but there are many European and Asian manufacturers to choose from. I can happily switch from orange juice to apple juice and I’m not a fan of bourbon anyway.
Things are going to get much worse the longer he persists on his crazy expansionist/isolationist path.
